Digest Viewer is an application that displays e-mailing list digests in a more convenient and easy-to-use form. It is compatible with dozens of different digest formats, but I can't guarantee that it will be compatible with all digests. If you find that it doesn't work with a certain digest, please send me a copy of that digest as an email attachment and I'll try to include support for it in the next release. Subject: Basic usage

Select any message from the Subjects list and Digest Viewer will display that message in this text field, and list all responses to it in the Replies list. Or, if you have Digest Viewer set to do so, it will display the responses directly below the message in the Subjects list. You can select any item in the Replies list to display that message, just like selecting it from the Subjects list.
You can use the up and down arrows to select the previous or next item from the currently selected list. If you have the "Sort messages by subject" option on, you can use the right arrow key to jump past all replies to the next thread of subjects, and the left arrow key to jump to the previous thread. If the message field is currently selected, the arrow keys will navigate through the Subjects list.
You can resize the various lists by dragging the dotted lines between them left or right. You can also make them shorter or taller by dragging the dotted line below them up or down.

Subject: Replying to messages

If you click on the "Send mail to…" link at the bottom, Digest Viewer will open the mail program of your choice (set from Internet Config, or the Internet control panel under Mac OS 8.5 or later), and create a reply to that message addressed to whoever sent it. You can also drag this link onto your desktop to create a clipping file of the sender's email address. Note that this addresses mail to the person who sent the message, NOT to the list itself.
If you hold down the option key on your keyboard, the "Send mail to..." link will change to "Send mail to all thread participants". Clicking on this will open your selected email program with a response addressed to everyone who sent a message on that topic.
At the bottom-right corner of this window, you'll see a link that says "Reply to list". This link will open your mail program with a response addressed to the list itself rather than the individual. However, this is only available for some digests.

Subject: Saving messages

You can save individual messages by selecting them from the Subjects list and choosing "Save Message…" from the File menu. This will save the body if the message as a plain text file.
You can also save entire threads. Simply select any message in a thread, and choose "Save Thread…" from the File menu. Digest Viewer will create a new digest that contains only messages in that thread.
If you want to add a thread to a file that already exists, choose "Append Thread to File…" from the File menu. Digest Viewer will then add those messages to the end of the selected digest.

Subject: Folder Browsing

If you selected "Browse Folder…" instead of "Open…" from the File menu, you'll also see the Digests list. This list contains all the digest files in the chosen folder, so you can easily switch from one to the next.
You can also set Digest Viewer to display the messages from ALL the digests from the folder at once. Digest Viewer will not be able to group topics that spread over multiple digests, but you can still access all replies accross many digests by using the Replies list.
When you have Digest Viewer set to display all the digests as one, selecing an item from the Digests list will simply select the first message from that digest in the Subjects list, so you can quickly and easily go from digest to digest without scrolling through many messages.

Subject: The Find feature

Digest Viewer also includes a convenient Find feature. Choose "Find…" from the Edit menu, and a window will appear.
Just type in whatever word or phrase you want to search for, and click Find. You can specify to search in the message body, subject, or both. If you are browsing a folder of digests, you can choose to search through every digest in that folder at once.

Digest Viewer has many settings that you can use to customize it to suit your needs. Choose "Preferences…" from the "Edit" menu, and a window with many settings will appear. Here I'll tell you what they all do.
General preferences:
Show reply list:
If this box is checked, Digest Viewer will display a list to the right of the Subject list with all the replies to the selected message.
Show names in message list:
If this box is checked, Digest Viewer will display next to the message subject the name or email address of the person who sent the message.
Make all digests Digest Viewer files:
By default, when you open a file with Digest Viewer, it becomes a Digest Viewer file. Unchecking this box will make it leave the file's creator as it is.
Display URLs as clickable links:
If you check this option, Digest Viewer will make all URLs in messages web links just like the reply links at the bottom of the window. Like this: http://www.macinsearch.com/users/mjh
Message Listing:
This decides the order in which Digest Viewer will display messages. If you choose to group messages by subject, Digest Viewer will place all replies to a message directly below that message, slightly indented in the list. If you select to sort them by date, Digest Viewer will display them in the order they appear in the digest.
Text Appearance:
Message Appearance:
This lets you set the font and size for the messages in this field.
List Appearance:
This lets you set the font and size for tor the text in the lists at the top.
Folder Browsing:
When opening a folder, display...:
This tells Digest Viewer which files to display when you browse a folder.
Only non-Digest Viewer text files:
Digest Viewer will only display digests that are NOT Digest Viewer files. This is convenient when you have several new digests and want to read them at once, without having all your old ones in the way.
Only DIgest Viewer text files:
Digest Viewer will only display Digest Viewer files, which is handy if you want to search for something in previously read digest.
Both:
Digest Viewer will display all text files, regardless of what program created them.

• Major speed improvements. Digest Viewer 3.0 opens digests about twice as fast as version 2.2.
• Digest Viewer can now optionally display all URLs in messages as clickable links, just like in a web browser.
• When browsing a folder, Digest Viewer can optionally display all digests in the folder at once, eliminating the need to switch between digests using the Digests list, and making it easier to follow threads that span multiple digests.
• When browsing a folder, you can now set Digest Viewer to ignore all digests that are not Digest Viewer files, ignore all digests that ARE Digest Viewer files, or display all digests.
